An Abundance of Katherines - Book Review (SPOILERS)

Before I start my review, I will say there will be spoilers. Sorry.

                                

In a nutshell:

Colin Singleton, is a prodigy and he loves girls named Katherine, he's loved 18 so far. In an attempt to combine his prodigious mind and his romantic experiences to create a single formula that will determine a course of a relationship, he goes roadtripping, end s up going out shooting and meeting a group of some quite extraordinary people.

The actual review:

It's official, I've turned author blind. They say too much of anything can make you sick, it is now apparent to me that this includes authors! The first book I read by Green was The Fault in our Stars, then Looking for Alaska, then Paper Towns, then, this - An Abundance of Katherines. For me, this book just didn't scream out Green's usual originality and I worry that this is because I have indulged myself in so much of his work. 

To begin with, when I finished, I didn't know what was wrong with it. I liked the characters, the storyline and I read it, which according to my rating system leaves only the writing and the ending. Upon reflection, that is, in my opinion, what is wrong.

My favourite character is definitely Hassan. His remarks are so witty and humorous and bring light to the darker(ish) themes of the story and make the brighter themes brighter. I also think that he is representative of many people his age in that he doesn't want it go into further education and is under pressure from his parents to do something with his life!

The storyline is well suited and up to Green's usual extraordinary-teenager-with-extraordinary-adventure theme.  However, it can also be seen as quite far fetched with 18 Katherines! Now, my name is Hannah - the 25th most popular name, Katherine isn't even in the top 50. I barely know ten Hannahs let alone 18 Katherines! If you do the maths you will see that 18 Katherines in 17 years (that are all your girlfriend and if a similar age) is pretty statistically unlikely (or he lives in an unimaginative neighbourhood).

For me, An Abundance of Katherines wasn't as gracefully worded as it could have been and it wasn't the quick read I thought it would be. 

To end this review, I will review the ending. The ending, although a happy and believable one, wasn't satisfying. I'm glad that Colin ended up with Lindsey, I thought that from when she was first introduced they would be a good couple. But what disappointed me was that Colin couldn't complete his equation. I think it is a waste of time to spend 200 pages trying to do something, for it not to happen, but what disappoints me further is that it is the reality of it!
